It was a record turnout in an up and coming race in Wildwood Crest. Well over 200 runners participated in this year’s Wildwood Crest 5K Beach Race, held on an out-and-back course on the beautiful beach in Wildwood Crest under cloudy and seasonably cool conditions. The race began and ended at the base of the Wildwood Crest Beach Pier at Heather Road. Participants in the race represented 11 different states, including as far away as Colorado, Illinois, Michigan and Florida. There were also two participants from Ireland and one from Canada.
Mike Melfi, 35, of Clay, N.Y., was the overall winner of the 5K race in 16 minutes, 52 seconds. Greg Thomas, 24, of the North Wildwood Beach Patrol, placed second in 18:11 and Michael McAndrew, 52, of Avoca, Pa., finished third in 18:52.
