On 7.9.10 at 6:51pm, Middle Twp. Police received a call of a head on motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Rte 47 and Fulling Mill Road. Upon arrival, officers found a white pickup truck in a yard on the South side of Rte 47 about 300 feet East of Fulling Mill Road. There was debris scattered in the road for about two hundred feet east of the pickup truck to the area of Walton Street. There was a green Saturn SL2 with heavy front end damage located in a ditch on the North side of the road. Rio Grande Rescue, their volunteer crew, Court House Rescue and Rio Grande Fire Department were on scene and used the “Jaws of Life” to cut apart the vehicle to extricate the driver, Felipe Nieves.
The accident is under investigation by Cpl. James Dougherty. Preliminary investigation indicates that John Marsden , of Rio Grande was traveling West on Rte 47. Felipe Nieves, 41, of the Villas was traveling East on Rte 47 and crossed the double yellow line striking the white pickup truck head on. The driver of the white pickup truck was not injured and refused any medical treatment. Nieves was transported to a nearby field on South Railroad Ave. where he was flown by helicopter to Atlantic Care Medical Center City Division for head, neck and internal injuries. Nieves was additionally charged with DWI. Middle Twp. Police shut down Rte 47 for about one hour.
