An Essex County man was indicted for vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal collision that left his passenger dead over a year ago.
On October 4, 2011, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a vehicle driven by Joao Simoes, 22, of Newark, collided with a deer on Vera King Farris Drive at Stockton College in Galloway Township. After colliding with the deer, the vehicle exited the roadway and impacted several trees.
The crash claimed the life of Simoes’ passenger, 21-year-old Joseph Miller, of Medford, the night before his 22nd birthday. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. Simoes was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Both men were students at Stockton College.
He faces the potential of five to ten years in prison.
