The small plane that crashed in the ocean just off the coast near Cape May Point departed an airport in Mercer County, New Jersey earlier in the day. NJ.com reports that the plane is a Mooney M20J aircraft and it is believed that the pilot was the only person on the plane. Lifeguards attempted to swim to the aircraft to perform a rescue. The aircraft is submerged and there is a massive response effort in the area to find the occupant. The plane went down a little over 1,000 feet from the Cape May Point Lighthouse.
