The U.S. Department of Justice submitted court arguments on Monday against sports betting in New Jersey. The Justice Department now joins major sports leagues in their opposition to the state’s plan to enact sports betting in casinos and racetracks. The two sides are in dispute over the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which bans sports betting outside the states of Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon. New Jersey officials do not plan to formally authorize or regulate sports betting, but will allow betting operations to exist.
