News reports are full of images of flooding and damage to buildings by Hurricane Sandy. There’s another problem from the storm involving oil spills from flooded heating oil tanks and fuel leaks from overturned boats. The Press of Atlantic City reports that there have been more than 260 spills or discharges of toxic chemicals caused by Sandy. Twenty-five of those have been reported in Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties. The U.S. Coast Guard has been inspecting the coastline from Long Branch to Cape May and responded to 33 spills. Cleaning up spilled petroleum products and other chemicals will add to the costs of the clean-up from Sandy.
