The economy has hurt the nation overall, but hasn’t been as bad as it could be at the shore. Tourism officials have told Coastal Broadcasting that they believe the campaign of being a tank of gas away has been a help in pushing people down to the shore. GWTIDA Executive Director John Siciliano says that the Wildwood island was on pace for record gains over the previous year before Hurricane Irene hit. Cape May County Tourism Director Diane Wieland has said they have seen success with the message and plan to continue to push the closeness to major cities like Philadelphia and New York as a selling point for budget-minder vacationers.
