The mother of a 5 year-old kindergarten student in Atlantic City has filed a complaint with the state education commissioner over her son’s suspension from school for over a month. The Press of Atlantic City reports that the child was found with a small boxcutter he said he found in class, and was deemed to be a danger to other students by the school’s principal. Elaina Reyes, the boy’s mother, says her son was not given a proper hearing and is being denied his education. The N.J. Department of Education prohibits schools from suspending preschoolers, because removing them is not an age-appropriate method of discipline.
