A citizens group from Strathmere has told a judge that it wants out of Upper Township. “Citizens for Strathmere and Whale Beach” appeared in court Monday and informed a judge that it wants Strathmere to break away from Upper Township due to a lack of municipal services. The group is represented in court by former New Jersey governor Jim Florio. If the group is successful, Upper Township would lose about 20 percent of its ratable base. Upper Township Solicitor Dan Young told the Press of Atlantic City that the group is simply “tax shopping”. Arguments in court on Monday centered around public safety, beach protection, and trash service.
