STATE REOPENS SHELLFISH BEDS FOLLOWING IRENE

It’s perfectly safe to harvest shellfish in New Jersey following Hurricane Irene. State environmental officials announced this week that they have reopened shellfish beds from Cape May Point north to Sandy Hook following the storm that brought devastating flooding to some parts of the state. A shellfish harvesting ban went into effect during the storm due to concerns about large volumes of storm water. Samples may be collected in the Delaware Bay on Wednesday.
