The horseshoe crab population has been threatened in recent years by commercial harvesting and habitat loss. This summer the Horseshoe Crab Enhancement Initiative was started in Cape May County to raise thousands of these creatures from eggs in aquariums and then release them. Some of the horseshoe crabs will be tagged, so research scientists can track their progress. The Wetlands Institute in Middle Township is one of five locations where the horseshoe crabs are being raised.
