Shipping companies were fined by the federal government, and that results in $1.5 million in fines that will be dedicated towards coastal projects in the Garden State. The United States Attorney’s Office in New Jersey announced Monday that the fines were levied against shipping companies that discharged oil or bilge water into the ocean. The money will be used to remove marine trash, restore wetlands, and conserve bird and fish populations along the New Jersey coastline. Marine debris will be removed from Great Egg Harbor and Absecon. None of the money is dedicated towards projects in Cape May County.
