A new report released on Thursday says that some funds were not spent wisely by the state last year. A $17.7 million federal stimulus check was supposed to go to a summer job program in the state. The Comptroller Matt Boxer said in his report that the dollars were used for public and nonprofit jobs, and very sparingly in the private sector. Boxer said record keeping was bad and the local governments did not provide how the program helped assist the youth in finding full-time jobs. The program called for a mix of public, private, and non-profit, but most of the jobs were created in the public sector; Boxer felt more could have been done to assist private growth.
