The federal government announced on Wednesday that recipients of Social Security will get a 1.7 percent increase in benefits next year. This marks the third year in a row that the annual cost-of-living adjustment will be less than two percent. The inflation rate for the Philadelphia-Atlantic City region was 1.3 percent during the past 12 months, according to the latest U.S. Consumer Price Index. The automatic annual increase in Social Security benefits was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1975.
