At approximately 7:10 a.m., Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) police officers responded to a report of an overturned school bus on the I-295 Northbound ramp to U. S. Route 9 Southbound. The school bus, operated by Arnold Johnson, 50, of Wilmington, DE and owned by Lehane Bus Company of New Castle, DE, was transporting forty –seven (47) students and one school aide to Pencader High School in New Castle, DE.
Thirty-two students and one school aide sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident. Twenty two (22) students were transported via ambulance while eleven (11), including the school aide, traveled via a Christiana Hospital medical bus. All were taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment.
The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the driver approached the ramp at an unsafe speed, causing the accident. As a result of the accident, the ramp is expected to remain closed until 12 noon. Traffic delays are expected. The DRBA police are continuing to investigate the accident and charges are pending.
