Local officials hope that fatalities along Route 50 can be reduced by re-striping with double yellow lines the length of the roadway. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has banned passing along Route 50, but the center stripes do not indicate the ban in areas of Hamilton Township and Estell Manor. Tourists use Route 50 as an alternate road for the 26-mile trip from Egg Harbor City to Upper Township. Five deaths and 151 injuries have occurred in accidents along Route 50 in 2011 and 2012.
