There are only three traffic lights on the entire Garden State Parkway and they are all in Cape May County. A project to remove the traffic signals was first proposed back in 1961. Finally, this year the project was fully funded and ready to go. However, construction will be delayed until land can be found for wetlands mitigation. The latest proposal was to convert the old railroad bed into West Wildwood into wetlands. Atlantic City Electric uses that land to deliver electricity to the Wildwoods and opposes the project. Now the New Jersey Turnpike Authority must look to acquire other property east of the parkway before construction can begin.
