Senate President Steve Sweeney and union leaders rallied to push back against attempts to make unions take major concessions on pension and health benefits. Carl Ichan, who owns the Tropicana, is the major lender to the Trump Taj Mahal and only offered to invest capital into the casino if the significant changes were made to the union contracts. The concessions being asked for amount to 35 percent of current compensation, when taking into account benefits.
