Lower Township officials are warning residents to be cautious of a telephone scam by callers claiming to represent the U.S. Department of the Treasury or the Internal Revenue Service. The callers claim those taxes must be paid immediately through a credit card, pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone. The IRS will never request personal or financial information by e-mail, texting or any social media. Suspicious calls of this nature should also be reported to the Lower Township Police Department at 609-886-1619.
