You may have seen the new 1.8 megawatt solar field under construction on Route 9 next to the Lower Cape May Regional High School. The new solar field will be used by the high school to provide 85 percent of their electric power, saving the district an estimated $125,000 per year in energy costs. School officials say the school is not paying for construction or maintenance of the solar panels, but purchasing the solar power at a lower rate. A similar solar field is being built to supply power to Lower Township’s Elementary School District. South Jersey Industries and other companies are building the solar farms and offering electricity to the township under a Solar Power Purchase Agreement.
