We will pay more at the pumps in New Jersey state tax as the rate will increase 0.9 cents on October 1st. The Patroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax will increase from the current 30.9 cents to 31.8 cents for gasoline next month, with diesel going from 34.9 cents to 35.8 cents. This is in addition to a fixed Motor Fuels Tax that brings the total in fuel taxes to 42.3 cents for gas and 49.3 cents for diesel fuel once the new rate takes effect. A 2016 law makes it mandatory for the state to collect approximately $2 billion in taxes from gas and diesel fuel sales to go toward the state Transportation Trust Fund. The increase was announced Friday following fuel consumption levels that missed the projected amount over the last year.
