South Jersey’s economic issues pushed New Jersey to be one of three states with a rise to the poverty rate. The data is looked at from between 2012 and 2013. New Mexico and Washington were the other two states with an increase. The number of those in poverty in the state rose to 998,549 from 934,943. It is expected that those numbers will only continue to rise when 2014 is taken into account because of the extreme issues happening in Atlantic City right now with four casinos closed and fifth possible.
