On Thursday police officers in Middle Twp. began a pilot program to test the use of body cameras in the field. The cameras will be worn by two officers on each patrol shift on a rotating basis. At the end of the pilot program, which is expected to last 30 to 45 days, the Police Department will make a determination on whether to submit a capital request to Township Committee to outfit each officer with a body camera. “We are always looking to invest in technology and provide tools to our officers to help them better do their jobs,” Chief of Police Christopher Leusner stated. “We have had cameras in our patrol cars since 2007 and the benefits have been substantial. I hope body cameras will prove to yield similar results.”
