Fire officials from Lower Township recently acquired a custom built, lighter fire truck that can access the Middle Thorofare Bridge to fight fires in Diamond Beach. The Cape May County Herald reports that the bridge linking Ocean Drive with Diamond Beach cannot accommodate a standard fire truck loaded with water. Lower Township decided to purchase a 14 ton basic pumper instead of waiting for the bridge to be repaired or rebuilt for heavier vehicles. The move will allow a more direct route for fire-fighting equipment to Diamond Beach than the current route through Rio Grande over the George Redding Bridge.
