Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam on Thursday announced they will introduce legislation as soon as possible to close a loophole currently allowing the early release of violent offenders and require intensive supervision for paroled nonviolent offenders.
The lawmakers said they would also ask the Attorney General to thoroughly review the state law allowing for the releases and recommend other changes that are needed to protect public safety and ensure no other loopholes exist.
The legislation would address concerns about a state law that took effect last year that was supposed to allow for the release of nonviolent offenders with strict supervision, but instead is also allowing the release of violent offenders.
