Senator Jeff Van Drew, Assemblymen Matt Milam and Nelson Albano today publically requested that Commissioner Jim Simpson expedite plans to remove the bascules on the Beesley’s Point Bridge as soon as possible, in the short term and begin the process to demolish the entire bridge. They have also requested that replacement of the Garden State Parkway Bridge be given the highest priority possible.
“I applaud the Cape May County Freeholder Board for doing their due diligence. They have found that since so much time has past the repair of the Beesley’s Point Bridge is not cost effective. The need for better access to Cape May County still exists and a new expanded Garden State Parkway Bridge makes the most sense. We have known that the Parkway Bridge needs replacement and is now even more of a priority due to the loss of the Beesley’s Point Bridge. This must be a top priority,” said Van Drew.
Milam added, “With Route 9 no longer being functional, the replacement of the Parkway Bridge is more of a necessity than ever particularly in an evacuation.”
Albano concluded, “Cape May County, its tourists and residents cannot be left isolated, which would be the result if there were structural problems with the Parkway Bridge.”
