As people have left the work force, the unemployment rate has as well heading into the winter. The new unemployment number in the state is 8.4 percent. New Jersey remains higher than the national average of 7.3 percent. The 8.4 percent was in effect for Sept. and Oct., versus 8.5 percent in Aug. These are the first report of numbers in a couple of months because of the federal work stoppage.
