State lawmakers in Trenton say they are not going to post votes on bills that would allow your local town to put its legal notices online anytime soon. Senate President Steve Sweeney told a newspaper editorial board that the measure will not be coming up for a vote in the Senate. Newspapers have strongly opposed the bill because they collect advertising dollars for the notices. Bill sponsors say local towns could save tax dollars by putting the notices on websites, noting that hardly anyone reads legal notices in newspapers anyway.
