There’s some new legislation in Trenton that would allow judges to stay on the bench for a longer period of time. The Assembly Judiciary Committee approved several bills on Monday that could keep Superior Court and Tax Court judges on the bench until the age of 75, instead of the current mandatory retirement age of 70. Some other judges may be able to stay on the bench until they are 85 years old. Supporters say these bills were drafted in the 1940s when life expectancy was a lot shorter.
