A Superior Court Judge ruled on Tuesday that the confession of one of three Camden men accused of murder, can be admitted at his trial. Phillip Byrd, 20 years old at the time, was interviewed on-camera shortly after his arrest for carjacking a Middlesex County couple from a casino parking garage last year and the murder of 28 year-old Sunil Rattu. Byrd is shown acknowledging his Miranda rights on camera, before he his described the details of the crime and identified the shooter. The suspect’s defense attorney Ed Weinstock argued that there was no verification that Byrd was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time. The judge also ruled that media coverage of the case did not warrant the trial to be moved to another location.
