Nearly 2,000 people participated in the HERO Walk on Sunday, a fundraiser for the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers. The goal of this year’s event on the Ocean City Boardwalk was $125,000. The HERO campaign was started by Bill and Muriel Elliot, after their son was killed by a repeat drunk driver in 2000. The program promotes local bars offering free soft drinks for designated drivers, and has spread to five states, a dozen colleges and several pro sports stadiums.
