On Monday a moist air mass and temperatures in the 90’s drove the heat index well above 100 degrees in many areas of South Jersey. By mid-afternoon the air temperature in Vineland and Millville was 92 degrees, but the heat index was at 100 degrees. The thermometer hit 95 in Chatsworth, Burlington County, as the heat index soared to 107 degrees. Monday was the second straight day of temperatures above 90 degrees in the region, with the possibility of more 90 degree readings on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. If that should occur, it will be the first official heat wave in South Jersey in over two years. Cooling centers were opened for senior citizens in need of relief in Lower Township, North Wildwood, Ocean City and Upper Township.
