The New Jersey Highway Authority announced today that a portion of the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County could be closed at times this weekend due to the planned demolition of a Parkway overpass.
The northbound Parkway will be closed to traffic between Exits 77 and 80 from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, and the southbound Parkway will be closed to traffic between the same exits from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.
Signed detours will be in place to direct motorists around the closed section of the highway.
Drivers should be aware that the detour plans for the weekend could be impacted by the weather.
The temporary closings will enable work crews to remove the structure that once carried Birch Street over the Parkway in the borough of Beachwood. The structure is being demolished as part of the Parkway widening project. A new, longer Birch Street Bridge was built parallel to the old one. That bridge, which was completed in December 2010, will remain open to traffic during the demolition of the old bridge.
