On Wednesday a retired police officer with 25 years of service confronted the Wildwood Crest Borough Commission about his alleged whistle-blowing in the department. The Press of Atlantic City reports that Lt. Michael Hawthorne, of Wildwood Crest, retired this month after he and his superior officer, Capt. David Mayer, were accused of misconduct. Mayer also retired. Hawthorne told the commissioners that he was forced to retire after bringing allegations of misconduct about his superiors to the attention of the borough solicitor. No criminal charges were filed against the officers but C.M.C. Prosecutor Robert Taylor allegedly informed Mayor Carl Groon in writing that neither officer would be called to testify in future criminal cases because of their conduct.
