If you see flags at half staff on Monday and don’t know why…a New Jersey native who was serving as a Marine was killed during a training exercise. United States Marine Capt. Stanford H. Shaw III, of Basking Ridge, was killed when the helicopter he was in crashed off the coast of Florida during a training operation. Captain Shaw was a dedicated and decorated Marine and the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon with two stars. “Captain Shaw’s patriotism and dedicated service to his country and his fellow Marines makes it appropriate and fitting for the State of New Jersey to remember him, to mark his passing, and to honor his memory,” said Governor Chris Christie.
