Vineland health officials have begun taking a census on the dog and cat population within the city. New Jersey law requires municipalities to conduct a dog census every two years and Vineland’s Municipal Code requires that cats must be included. Officials say it’s not about raising money via license fees, but protecting the public from rabies by tracking pet vaccinations. It’s believed that less than 25 percent of dogs in Vineland are properly licensed, and only six percent of owned cats.
