Gov. Chris Christie said they couldn’t afford it. Democrats now say they were right. Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Shelia Oliver said this week that the budget they presented last year was in line with revenue projections in the state. Sweeney noted that he predicted last year that Christie was underestimating the income figures so he could implement an income tax cut. Democrats wanted to use the money to fund some programs that had been cut that they believed were essential.
