A Cumberland County man was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree armed robbery and second-degree burglary, in connection with the Aug. 3 attack on an elderly Somers Point woman in her home, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel and Somers Point Police Chief Sal Armenia announced today.
Marvin Sherwood, 27, of 412 Finimore Street in Vineland, was also charged with possession of a weapon, a knife, possession of a weapon with an unlawful purpose and third-degree tampering with physical evidence. In addition, he was charged with third-degree terroristic threats for allegedly threatening to murder the victim if she called police or went to the hospital. Detectives served Sherwood with the arrest warrants at the Cumberland County Jail, Prosecutor Housel stated. Somers Point Police responded to a 911 call at 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 for a report that a woman had been attacked in her home. The victim, whose name is not being released due to the nature of the crime, was taken by ambulance to Shore Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.
Sherwood also is accused of stealing money from the victim and other items in the household. The arrest was based on evidence found at the scene and a location on the perpetrator’s path of flight, Prosecutor Housel said.
Aggravated sexual assault, a crime of the first-degree, carries a maximum prison sentence upon conviction of 20 years and $200,000 in fines.
