There is a new Freeholder overseeing tourism in Cape May County. During the reorganization, Susan Sheppard took over tourism. Freeholder Len Desiderio was the previous liaison, but took over the county’s library system. Coastal Broadcasting spoke with Sheppard and Tourism Director Diane Wieland. Sheppard said she is arranging meetings to try and coordinate county tourism efforts. The first meeting will be with tax funded tourism boards, like TDC boards. Another meeting will be held after that with local chambers of commerces. The idea is to find out what everyone is doing to promote themselves and try to work with the county on having a more unified message.
Wieland said that she is expecting the county to have a good summer tourist wise. The interest is there and higher gas prices will probably keep a lot of travelers closer to home this summer. The tourism department is going to continue its push into Canada, which was very successful in 2010.
