U.S. Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) was named Chairman of the House Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation Subcommittee by full House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica (FL-07) for the 112th Congress. LoBiondo previously served as chair of the subcommittee from 2001 through 2006 until he was term-limited out of his chairmanship. In 2009, he assumed the top Republican position on the subcommittee which has jurisdiction over policies and issues pertaining to the U.S. Coast Guard, maritime transportation safety and security policies. This assignment is particularly critical with two major Coast Guard facilities located within the 2nd Congressional District – Air Station Atlantic City and the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May.
LoBiondo today also received his final subcommittee assignments for the 112th Congress. As requested, LoBiondo will remain on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, though subcommittee assignments and leadership responsibilities have expanded to meet the diverse needs of the 2nd District.
LoBiondo is the only member from South Jersey serving on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. In addition to being named Chairman of the Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, LoBiondo’s assignments are as follows:
Subcommittee on Aviation – The subcommittee has jurisdiction over civil aviation policy, labor issues, equipment and security, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). LoBiondo retained his seat on the subcommittee due to the explicit ties to the 2nd District, including the FAA Tech Center, TSA Security Lab, Federal Air Marshal training facility, and the Atlantic City International Airport. LoBiondo has been a member of the subcommittee since 1997.
Subcommittee on Highways and Transit – The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the nation’s highway, transit, and highway safety programs, as well as the policy that governs how highway and transit projects are planned, approved, and constructed. Given the extensive transportation needs of South Jersey and the state, LoBiondo will focus on federal support for critical local projects.
LoBiondo’s subcommittee assignments on the House Armed Services Committee are as follows:
Subcommittee on Tactical Air & Land Forces – The subcommittee has jurisdiction over all Army and Air Force acquisition programs (except strategic missiles and lift programs, special operations and information technology accounts) and the associated weapons systems sustainment accounts. In addition, the subcommittee will be responsible for Navy and Marine Corps aviation programs and the associated weapons system sustainment accounts, National Guard and Army and Air Force reserve modernization, and ammunition programs. LoBiondo has been a member of the subcommittee since 2003, and retained his membership due to the jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the 177th Fighter Wing in Atlantic County.
Subcommittee on Readiness – The subcommittee has jurisdiction over military readiness, training, and logistics; and deployment preparation and processes. In addition, the subcommittee will be responsible for all military construction, depot policy, installations and family housing issues, including the Base Realignment & Closure process and energy policy and programs of the Department of Defense. LoBiondo retained this subcommittee assignment to ensure the 177th Fighter Wing has the necessary facilities to complete its missions.
