The Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies are set to conduct Operation Dry Water June 24 to 26.
The national enforcement effort coordinated by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators is designed to highlight the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to the most recent statistics, boating under the influence is still the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, with 17 percent of boating fatalities a direct result of alcohol or drug use.
All 50 states and six territories participated in Operation Dry Water last year. During that weekend, there were 40,127 vessels and 66,472 boaters contacted by law enforcement, 322 BUI arrests made, 4,171 citations and 7,522 warnings issued for safety violations, according to NASBLA statistics.
