Senate President Steve Sweeney almost became acting governor last week. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno was hospitalized in a bicycle accident. Just a couple of weeks ago Gov. Chris Christie said he didn’t think he should have to make Guadagno acting governor every time he leaves the state. The legislation was written a long time ago creating a succession plan when the governor would leave the state, but was well before modern communication. Christie points out he always has a cell phone or email and can answer all issues. Republican lawmakers are working on a bill that would allow the governor to maintain all of his power when he does leave the state.
