A budget was introduced in Cape May County that would see the tax rate increase slightly. The tax message from Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton calls for less than a half cent tax hike and it would raise the tax levy by 2.2 percent. The budget is $3 million more than 2014, due to an increase in operating expenses. Total salaries and wages remained flat. The budget will also use 52 percent of the county’s surplus, or $9 million. The new equalized tax rate for the county would be .215 cents per $100 assessed valuation. A public hearing and possible adoption of the budget would take place on Feb. 24.
