A debate was held on Thursday night by the Taxpayers Association of Cape May with the two candidates running for mayor in November. Incumbent Mayor Ed Mahaney and challenger Rusty Chew debated the role of the mayor in Cape May City government. Chew claimed that Mahaney is overstepping his authority under the council-manager form of government, which says that members of City Council have equal powers. Mayor Mahaney stated that he is merely doing his job, which includes networking and bringing grant funding into the city. The debate was attended by about 100 Cape May residents, who heard the candidates list their top five issues.
