A man who was attempting to kill himself was successfully disarmed by Bridgeton Police. The 45-year-old Lake St. man was first attempted to commit suicide in the basement of a residence and then barricaded himself in a bedroom containing additional weapons including a knife he armed himself with. Police said the man, who they are also not identifying at this time, held officers at bay for nearly an hour as one of the department’s trained hostage negotiators, Ptlm. Deena Bertolini, and other officers talked with the subject through the barricaded door and a bedroom window. According to police, the man repeatedly stated that he wanted the officers to shoot him, but officers, including Lt. Tom Speranza and Sgts. Wayne Miller and Paul Genovese, were able to force their way into the bedroom and after a brief struggle with the subject who was still armed with the knife, he was subdued.
