On Saturday several beachfront communities conducted beach sweeps by volunteers to help clean-up local beaches and harbors. The sweeps are part of an effort by the Clean Ocean Action group, that documents the type and amount of trash collected along the beaches of New Jersey. Local volunteers at Cape May Harbor were joined by 50 US Coast Guard recruits and 20 members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The beach sweepers were asked to also remove invasive plant species during the clean-up, such as phragmites reeds, English Ivy, and Japanese Honeysuckle.
