The emergency beach fill in Avalon concluded on Thursday with the final areas of sand being pump. The work is done ahead of the July 1 deadline. Avalon’s beaches received 600,000 cubic yards of sand during the work, from 9th to 26th sts. Great Lakes continued to work ahead of schedule on the project due to favorable weather conditions and no major mechanical interruptions. By contract, the beach fill project had to conclude by July 1st. Sand pumping operations will now conclude about one week ahead of schedule. The 24 hour a day, seven day a week project will result in a brand new beachfront for Avalon between 9th and 26th streets. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company informed Avalon officials on Thursday that most of the north end beaches will be accessible and open to the public by Saturday, and all of the beaches will be open on Sunday. All of the equipment will be off the Avalon beachfront by the conclusion of the weekend.
