A 5-year-old from Erma died on Friday from a rare case of bacterial meningitis, that progressed quickly from a simple ear infection. Lilyana Fernandez, or “Lil” as her friends called her, first complained of an earache about two weeks ago. After a few days of treatments with ear drops and fever reducers, Lil was taken to the local hospital on Saturday lethargic, feverish and with pain in both ears. On Sunday, her mother, Shannon Decker, rushed her to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where Lil had emergency brain surgery to relieve pressure from fluid on her brain. She never regained consciousness and passed away five days later. Doctors are still trying to determine how Fernandez became infected with the bacterial meningitis.
