The Borough of Avalon experienced a record high tide during the Monday evening high tide in the community. Water completely covered Dune Drive in Avalon and came up as high as the third step on the Avalon Police Department. Two feet of water went into the Avalon Fire House; it’s the first time in history that water has come into the fire house. Dune Drive was impassable in Avalon as of 9:30pm.
The Avalon Office of Emergency Management was on a conference update call with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie this evening. The Governor made no mention about any possible re-entry to any shore points along the Jersey Shore. He characterized Wednesday as a day of assessment in New Jersey coastal communities.
The National Weather Service is not forecasting any additional significant rain for Avalon past Monday night. Currently, winds are at 50mph sustained with gusts to 65mph as Sandy continues to move on the mainland.
Dry conditions are expected on Tuesday. The mandatory evacuation order continues and no one is allowed re-entry at any time, for any reason, into the Borough of Avalon.
