The Borough of Avalon is moving forward with plans to host an electronic vehicle charging station. The new charging station will promote clean energy and is expected to be installed before the start of the 2011 summer tourism season.
“Avalon is proud to once again be on the cutting edge of new technology that promotes a greener environment”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “Electric vehicles are enjoying an exponential growth throughout the country. The Borough is pleased to bring this charging station to the Jersey Shore. The project is currently going out to bid, and we anticipate a high level of interest in bringing this innovative, clean technology to Avalon”.
The bid specifications for this project call for the new electronic charging station to be located in front of the Avalon Public Safety Building at 30th street and Dune Drive in Avalon. The successful vendor will install and maintain the charging station at no cost to the Borough. In return, the Borough will receive a small percentage of the proceeds generated by the charging station.
The owner of an electric vehicle will be able to pull up to charging station and use a special smart card or a credit card that will unlock and activate the service. The owner of the vehicle pays for the power that is used and is sent a text or email notification when the service is completed, or interrupted for some reason. “Many owners of electric vehicles who visit a shore resort do not have the ability to recharge their vehicles ‘on the road’ to continue their trip”, Pagliughi said. “This electronic vehicle charging station gives people another great reason to visit Avalon and enjoy our community while their vehicle is being recharged”.
